The loudest silence
This place left me feeling unsettled.
Maybe it was the way the trees were closing in on that old church. Or maybe it was the way I felt them closing in on me.
It might have been the plywood where the stained glass had been, like a blind eye somehow watching me.
Or it might have been truly a sinister place.

I wonder about this place. I’d been in a couple of nearby towns, walking all around making photos and didn’t feel unsettled or anything. But this place? I couldn’t leave fast enough.

I can understand. Some churches close for good reasons.

Or all of that and more…Nice find and I do like the image.

Thanks, Robert. I shot this a few months ago, and had tried to work with it a couple of times, but wasn’t happy with the results. The other day, thought, it all came together.

Some images are just like that – I routinely do not process any images until several days after i visit a location – often I will sit on them for months before processing.

I almost never delete anything. As my Photoshop skills get better, there are quite a few older images that wouldn’t have been usable a few years ago that I can work with now. And, looking back after time’s passed makes them look fresh again.
(Although, this happens a lot, too: I look back at older stuff and discover that it’s actually terrible. But I still don’t delete it!)

I agree – NEVER Delete! Just purchased a 2TB drive and 6 TB RAID because I never delete…

I would not be surprised if there were a lot of snakes around this place.
You have to wonder about the use of the plywood – why not just let it fall down quickly instead of drawing out the agony? Perhaps there was false optimism about reopening the building, or selling it.

I suspect there was a lot of false optimism. So much, in fact, that I see “False Optimism” is actually the better name for the photo.

Well, not to sound contentious or anything, but it would be a good name for any shot of a church, temple, etc. But maybe this one in particular. Feel free to use it 🙂
