Squared

011116

A large glass and metal piece in front of the Hunter Kirkland Contemporary gallery in Santa Fe. The squares of glass moved in the breeze, giving the piece a nice kinetic quality.

(Unfortunately, I don’t know who the artist is, and a review of the artists’ pages on the gallery’s website didn’t help.)

Ladder

011016

For reasons that I do not know, there was a ladder on this snowy roof. The snow was starting to melt, and sheets of it were sliding off the metal roofs of buildings all over town.

And another storm was on the way.

The Pilgrim

010916

Someone approaching the church, perhaps to worship, perhaps to seek healing from the holy dirt that’s in a small room off the main chapel.

I saw two women and a small boy putting small amounts of the dirt into plastic bags they’d brought with them; they were using an orange scoop and speaking softly, with reverence; I felt like (and in fact, was) an intruder and didn’t stay. A brochure in a rack beside the dirt warned visitors to neither eat the dirt nor steep and drink it.

Also – those bags on the wall are similar to the farolitos in Santa Fe, only these are plastic bags with electric lights inside.

Left in Hopes

010816

Because of its reputation as a healing site, many of the faithful visit the church at Chimayó. The churchyard has many small shrines, each one festooned with items that have been left in hope of a miracle.

But just because it’s available doesn’t mean it’s a good idea…
