I was with my friend Mike, who hadn’t been in the desert very many times – he remarked on how much STUFF there was, then we talked about how where he’s from, there’s probably as much stuff everywhere, but it’s covered over with vegetation. All of that to say, the desert makes it easy to see things like this, since it’s there in plain sight.

I once wrote a poem called “The Desert Always Wins” about how failures are forever in full display and etc. I submitted it as part of a portfolio review and the reviewer took STRONG exception to that poem. I am the first to admit that it was probably a lame poem, but still – maybe he/she ought to have looked at a desert before writing those comments!

Did that person explain why they took exception?

They thought it was incorrect to say that deserts “always” win, if I remember. Whatever…

I know! I didn’t even get a good start on photographing all of them before the sun went down!
