No Point
That door seems to be, at best, sort of pointless.
The other day I couldn’t think of anything to photograph, so I consulted a little pink Moleskine book where I used to keep a running list of places I wanted to shoot, hoping for an idea. This old hotel wasn’t listed specifically, but the general part of town it’s in was, so the Patient Spouse and I headed out. It was a real treasure, photographically speaking. (I hope you agree, as this is the first of eight images form the place…) (Don’t say I didn’t warn you.)

We-ell, that door would have had its uses back in the day……surely?

This is a 3-story hotel, and the door used to access a glassed-in area around the stairs. So, it did have a purpose.

I think you are trying to turn me into a filmmaker….

I think you’re doing it yourself. I’m just pointing it out. These are one-frame films.

One-frame films, for people with short attention spans. (Lately added to my to-do list: learning how to use the video function on my b&w camera. So there’s that.)

Is your camera actually black-and-white, or do you simply post-process black-and-white?

It is actually black and white, a Leica Monochrom. (Obviously anything on the blog that’s in color is made with other cameras, either my Nikon or my phone.)
It’s a long story about the Leica, but the condensed version is that I used an inheritance from my dad to get it.

As with the Leica name, your work is timeless…

Careful – I’m starting to get the big head over here…
Seriously, though, I really do appreciate your comments and support of my work. I haven’t made an announcement on the blog yet, but I will be having a solo show here in Lubbock in August, with photos (made with the Leica!) of our municipal auditorium/coliseum complex, which will be demolished later this year. I *hope* those photos are timeless… (They are very dark. Literally, I mean. And artistically, too.)

Yes, well, I just spent a long time looking at those images, all of which are delicate and lovely and thought-provoking…

Thank you very much. I’m glad you took the time. As you can see, they’re not for everyone. But the ones that they are for, they are really for.

Thank you very much. New poppies will be coming up soon. Time to have another crack at it.

They are very nearly my favorite flower, even though I’ve never been lucky enough to see them in the wild. I’ll be in San Francisco mid-April – is that too late to catch ’em?

You have an excellent chance of seeing lots of poppies. Anywhere. But this year may be special. Google “California superbloom 2019.” Arrange your trip to enable you to get to the central- and Southern California valleys while you’re out here. How long will you be out here?

I’ll only be in the area April 12-17, for my professional organization’s annual conference. If I arranged it right, I’ll get enough of my continuing education credits by Monday, and will have all day on Tuesday free; that might be a good time to rent a car and head out of the city, no? But probably not enough time to get to the valleys…

Make it happen. I will be scoping out areas in and near the bay area and will have lots of suggestions for you by then.

I’m on it. I also accept suggestions on local places to eat/drink and interesting things to see that I might not otherwise know about…

Will do. What’s the conference?

Thanks – I will be in touch.
My job isn’t really urban planning – I work as a grants writer/planner for a non-profit agency, so my planning is more “strategic” than “urban” but still… I’m a licensed planner and the agency pays my dues and registration and conference expenses so I can maintain my license. And yes, it is a very interesting gig…
