Lobby, Holland Hotel

I had to wait a few minutes for the desk clerk to return and give me the key to my room. Naturally, I filled up the time without any problem…

Granada and a distant storm

I got up early on my last morning in Alpine and took a walk down Holland Avenue. When I turned around to go back to the hotel, I saw thunder clouds piling up above the mountains east of town.

Later, at breakfast, I heard a woman say she’d seen lighting.

It never rained.

Laundromat, early morning

Seating arrangement

There are a lot of things I like about this handmade bench: the 2×4 legs (one with paint, one without), the way the carpet’s not centered, the scallops on the bottom edge of the carpet, that dead branch guarding the approach.

But what I like best is thinking that someone missed their loved one so much they build it in the first place.
