Really, Austin?
Sometimes, I just don’t know what to think. Every now and then, things in Texas just seem so….crass.
Here’s an example. Just the other day, my pal in Canada posted this beautiful, simple shot of a clothesline against a blue sky. Go look at it. I’ll wait….
Nice shot, right? Simple, almost Zen-like.
At approximately the same time, I saw this:

The Spontaneous Prose Store
I was wandering around, the way I do, taking pictures. I was on 6th Street when I heard the sound of…a typewriter. I can’t say for certain that was the first outdoor typewriter I’d heard, but it may have been.
And there, in front of the Driskill Hotel, I saw it: the Spontaneous Prose Store. The proprietor, Kaile H. Glick, was gracious about letting me take pictures while she wrote on a topic of my choice.
She typed on a label, with a piece of blue carbon paper behind so she can keep a record of her work.
Here’s what she wrote for me:
Be sure to stop by her blog. Oh, and look around – maybe you’ll see her in your town.

“What do you see?”
Sunday morning in Austin, killing a bit of time before I have to head to the airport. I see this stripe in this parking lot and like how it looks with that tent way back there, by the alley. As I stand up, after taking the picture, a pedestrian stops, looks toward the same stripe, parking lot, tent, and says, “What do you see?” I try to explain, but even I can tell that my explanation seems lame. He’s unconvinced of my artistic vision, but I can tell that he may be convinced of my lack of good sense.
I get that a lot.
