The night door

Next to this building, the soft light of the frosted-glass door spills out onto South Congress Avenue. I had to time the shot to occur during gaps in pedicabs heading down the sidewalk toward the more lively parts of South Congress.

Do not leave car

010613

This place was a great find. It’s just a block from the grounds of the state capitol, and my feeling is that the next time I’m in town, it’ll probably turned into something else. And that will be sad, because you just know something new won’t have that excellent sign that says, “Do not leave car without keys through front door.” And, I guess no matter how sophisticated Austinites think they are, the “spin-cast deer feeders” sign sort of betrays them.

The weather was changing: the day that started clear ended up overcast and damp.

Taken across the street from the Texas Chili Parlor, referenced in the famous Guy Clark song Dublin Blues and almost literally in the shadow of the capitol building. (If you go to the Chili Parlor, order up a mad dog margarita and hum a few bars for Guy.)

Combo meal

This place needs a little bit of work, maybe.

But check out the lunch special – less than six bucks seems like a pretty good bargain, although I am not sure I’d want to sit very close to that wall.

Of course, in addition to taking pictures along 6th Street on Sunday morning, another good time to visit would be any time the sun’s still up. The place doesn’t really get started until way past dark.

If your fondest desire has been to run a bar in Austin, you might want to check this place out.
