Cyril and Methodius – brother saints
My last stop on the one-day tour of painted churches took me to Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Dubina. I’d never heard of these saints at all until the end of November, when a rambling drive led us to this cemetery near Buckholts, Texas. (Dubina and Buckholts are a hundred miles apart – by Texas standards that makes them “close together.”)
But, anyway, here’s a view of the back of the church looking across to the adjacent cemetery.

PS – In the next couple of weeks, I’ll be visiting another Cyril-and-Methodius church! Suddenly those guys are just everywhere.

Yes, they’re everywhere, including my home town of Corpus Christi. I remember thinking as a child what curious names Cyril and Methodius were.

Wait, you’re from Corpus?! I’ll be there next week, for my real job! And after that’s done, I’m heading up to Shiner to see the painted church – Cyril & Methodious, of course! (Any dining suggestions for downtown Corpus?0

First this (and I don’t know if you want to make such a lengthy side-trip or not):

Where’s that? It’s beautiful. I’ve got to be in Johnson City at 3 on the 24th so I have some wandering time built in…

The you’ve-got-a-comment email had the link but it’s not working on my phone. I have a friend in Victoria who also told me about Panna Marie. I’ll look at the map… (Is that your photo?)

I left CC 50 years ago and I think the last time I was there was 10 years ago and I’m vegetarian, so I’m afraid I’m not much help. The city is a shabby shell of what it used to be, though the bayfront area can sometimes still be nice.

My husband left Kingsville about that long ago – it’s also a shabby shell…

Melinda, no, it’s not my photo. The church is the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Google that and Panna Maria and you’ll find plenty.

Right now I’m doing documentary photography so you might have to go back a little ways to find anything even potentially interesting.

Just 5 miles up highway 123 from Panna Maria there’s the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the community called Cestohowa, but it’s not a painted church. I only know about these places because I used to occasionally drive between Austin and Corpus, and the Polish and Czech names were so exotic to me.
After Austin I moved to Albuquerque (but we already talked about that).

I am in Albuquerque at this very moment!
Those Czech and Polish names are interesting to me, too. The first time I encountered them was when I was at A&M, when I took a photography class, and discovered some old country cemeteries.

Albuquerque brings to mind the Ernst Haas photo of Central Avenue:

Hi Melinda,
We toured the Painted Churches a few years ago. Beautiful is not enough to describe.
If you are going to Corpus, Here are two really good places to eat in Downtown at the bay front – Railroad Seafood Station 1214 N Chaparral St, and Harrison’s Landing 108 Peoples St # T-HEAD

Pody – those churches were just amazing. I couldn’t get enough of them!
Also, thanks for the recommendations for places to eat in Corpus! I’ll let you know where we end up going.
