This scene has all the things I love in a photograph: old brick, old wood, new weeds, some sky, a cloud, a bit of pavement. No wonder I stopped to take a picture.

I am not certain if the ring of dead trees around this old house is protecting or threatening, although I am leaning toward the latter.

I was in Clairmont, taking pictures, when an old man pulled away from the four-maibox post by the highway and stopped to ask me a question.

He said: You gonna put my town on the map?

I said: That depends. Do you want me to?

He said: Yes, ma’am, I do.

I said: I will do what I can.

So, here it is, the main sight in Clairmont, the 1895 jail.

From the late 1890s until 1954, Clairmont was the county seat of Kent County. Since 1954, though, it looks as though things have dropped off quite a bit. I don’t hold out much hope that this blog entry is going to put the old man’s town on the map, but I promised him I’d try.
