Shroud
This sort of struck me as a menacing little scene, so I didn’t stick around to investigate. Keep in mind, though, that I shot this in 2013 – now I probably would have not only stuck around, but would have made about 120 more images while I was there.
Things change….

Some more news
One of my very favorite places is the small town of Alpine, Texas, in the part of the state that’s known as Far West Texas. There’s just something about the air, the sky, the food, the art, the people that makes me feel centered and calm.
I try to get out there at least once a year (it’s a four hour drive from home, a short trip by Texas standards), and when I go, of course I take my camera along.
My most recent trip was in July, and I entered some of the photos I made then in the Visit Alpine photo contest.
Late last week, I learned that two of those images had been selected as finalists in the contest; you can see the entire set of finalists here. (Also, my good friend Justin Burrus has a photo that was named as a semifinalist – the fantastic shot of a nighttime train.)
And here are my images, my tribute to a town that I love:

What fueled her dreams
Imagine her, sitting alone at dinner, observing the couple at the next table.
Imagine her, watching the man, talking without looking at his companion, as he gently cupped the candle with his left hand.
Imagine her, watching the light bounce from his wedding ring.
Imagine.

all these years of thinking ended up like this
My pre-dawn walk in Alpine the other morning gave me some nice things to photograph (like the laundromat and the marquee). The abandoned water bottle…this became all about the water bottle.
It’s been a while since I’ve linked random song lyrics to my images, but this one made me think of Bruce Cockburn’s song “Understanding Nothing.”
