Old Route 66 is the spine of town, traversing the length from east to west. Along the way, in addition to Bobby’s Trading Post (above), you can see a graffiti swimming pool, a dark and vacant highway, this abandoned liquor store, and a vacant gas station.

If you ask me, a seaside statue of a winged figure doesn’t really make that much sense. But there it was, so I guess it made sense to someone.

But besides that, what’s with those head wings? I really don’t get that.

Far West Texas is my favorite part of the state – it’s got mountains, a nice dry climate, open spaces, and this gem – Balmorhea State Park. It’s an oasis where an artesian spring fills the world’s largest spring-fed swimming pool.

The pool and the buildings at the park were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. This is a view looking down at the handrail at the steps going down into the pool.
