A wrench in the works

031016

The same broken down, rusted truck had been parked outside this place for at least four years, so I figured if I went in to look around, there’d be no one else there.

And I was right. I was the only one there, and I found the usual assortment of odd, abandoned things. Like a two-legged chair. And a giant wrench.

All in all, it was worth the stop.

An attempt to blend in

When I was inside this place, I looked out the (glass-free) window and saw this trailer house trying to camouflage itself. It was doing a pretty good job, I guess, except for those two satellite dishes on top.

The Critical Element

This county park south of Marathon is an oasis – there’s a small dam across a stream, which makes for a nice wetlands habitat. There are big elm trees, too, so even in the heat of summer it’s a nice place to visit.

But if you’re planning a picnic, this particular picnic shelter is probably not your best option.

Traveler’s Rest

A “crumbling adobe” is practically a cliche out here, but this adobe building really is crumbling away.

This place used to be a motel, a welcome respite for travelers in this remote part of Texas. But now, it’s all about that suitcase.
