Another shot from Sudan, just a couple of blocks from the yard sale sign. Kind of a mystery, I think, about what “This” refers to, but I like it.
This entire block of buildings had once been busy; I saw evidence of a beauty shop, a video store, the Eastern Star place, some offices, and so on. But now: nothing was still in business and the roofs were caved in.
Good for photography; bad for the town.

That dried out shrub blown onto the door step is a fantastic detail – says so much more than This.

That dried up shrub is actually a piece of a tumbleweed (http://bit.ly/extu3), that ubiquitous symbol from Western movies, books about the dust bowl, and something that’s almost always mentioned in any article about small towns in this part of Texas, where apparently tumbleweeds tumble down deserted streets at mid-day every time a writer shows up.

One wonders if some sort of apocalypse hit Sudan, leaving it to decay and go back to nature. The photos are extraordinary, though.

Poor Sudan – there’s just not much left. Which is, of course, why I went there to take pictures!
