he seemed like a movie star

At this point, I believe I’ve completed my big photographic pivot – the majority of the images I made during a recent trip to Sicily were street photos. And not only that, I enjoyed seeing what was going on around me and being able to chronicle those things through my lens.

This gentleman was more than happy to strike a few poses; he had a regal bearing and one hell of a nice hat.

local expert (probably)

Two benches, facing the fishing-boat harbor, had three men on each of them. It felt like they knew every single that had happened or was likely to happen in their town. I had the idea the seating arrangements were the same every day, and that this gentleman, on the end of the bench that afforded the best view, had ascended to the power position through his long tenure of being watchful.

one eye

We spent our morning in Collesano following our hosts through a variety of local shops as they gathered ingredients (cheese, cured meats, pastries) for the lunch they’d later prepare for us. At the cheese store, this little girl and I made brief (and sort of incomplete) eye contact with each other.

transport

Yes. I am aware that none of these people are wearing helmets. I am also aware that they were moving rapidly down a street.

But I was there for the photos, not for reforming local transportation and/or safety norms.

I did a thing.

And that thing was to make a return visit to Sicily.

The first night in Palermo, my friends and I grabbed dinner at a sidewalk place, the way you do. The whole time we were there, the proprietor of the little shop next door was washing out the pans he used to roast nuts. So naturally, I made some photographs.

This felt like a strong photographic start to the trip.
