The Spontaneous Prose Store

I was wandering around, the way I do, taking pictures. I was on 6th Street when I heard the sound of…a typewriter. I can’t say for certain that was the first outdoor typewriter I’d heard, but it may have been.

And there, in front of the Driskill Hotel, I saw it: the Spontaneous Prose Store. The proprietor, Kaile H. Glick, was gracious about letting me take pictures while she wrote on a topic of my choice.

She typed on a label, with a piece of blue carbon paper behind so she can keep a record of her work.

Here’s what she wrote for me:

Be sure to stop by her blog. Oh, and look around – maybe you’ll see her in your town.

Thanks for asking

Something old, something new (if you go right to left).

And – this is the best part, really – the other side of the old building had this:

“What do you see?”

031412

Sunday morning in Austin, killing a bit of time before I have to head to the airport.   I see this stripe in this parking lot and like how it looks with that tent way back there, by the alley.  As I stand up, after taking the picture, a pedestrian stops, looks toward the same stripe, parking lot, tent, and says, “What do you see?”  I try to explain, but even I can tell that my explanation seems lame.  He’s unconvinced of my artistic vision, but I can tell that he may be convinced of my lack of good sense.

I get that a lot.

The money machine: Austin

If you don’t have the $5.95 for a combo meal at this place, this ATM is just around the corner.

But more importantly, why do you suppose that bricked-in window was so low?

Oh, and for those of you keeping score at home, you can add to my list of terms I hate this one: ATM machine.

Three arches

012113

Another scene from an alley, this time in Austin.

I like the little window air conditioner.  And I like the scraggly tree, trying to make a go of it, even though it’s not likely anyone tends to it.  I like the metal door.  I like the texture of the wood at the top of the building and how it contrasts with the brick.

But mostly I like the three arched openings and the way they’ve been bricked in.
