The old hospital has been abandoned; there’s a new one out on the highway.

In February 1973, my grandfather died in this place, the one with the broken glass, the opportunistic weeds, the memories.

Still in Floydada, still on California Street. But this is taken along East California Street, which puts it on the other side of the courthouse square.

I found this gem in the alley between West California Street and West Mississippi Street, just off South Main Street.

Floydada, Texas

(By the way, Google maps indicates that there’s no other town named “Floydada.” But, if you recall from a few days ago, Google can be wrong. However, in this case, MapQuest concurs. So I think it is safe for us to assume that there is just the one Floydada. You will probably rest a lot easier tonight, now that we’ve cleared that up.)

Say you are on a trip. In Missouri. With no real destination other than generally getting from St. Louis to Kansas City. And say you happen to notice on the map (because you are like that, preferring actual, paper maps over a GPS) a town called Frankenstein.

Of course you have to go!

And say, on your way through Frankenstein, you notice a big church (Our Lady, Help of Christians, as it turns out) with a playground and a graveyard beside it. You have to stop.

And, because you saw the town on the map and the church in the town, you also saw this: a caretaker’s hut, built of brick to match the church, with a white door held closed by a board.

It was a great trip.
