Car repair (not) done here
Maybe you recognize this from an earlier post? Thanks to an open door at the back of the place, I was able to step inside and look around. The best thing I saw was this view from one of the service bays, with the garage door windows providing a frame to both the inside and the outside.
I don’t know how long the building’s been vacant – the business has moved to a new location – but it is for sale. The building is 1,556 square feet, and is in need of some renovation. For one thing, the restroom adjacent to the office doesn’t have a sink in it. It’s not that vandals have taken the sink. It’s never had one. Why was THAT a good idea?

Shadows on a distant wall
My cat, Balboa, gets credit here: if she hadn’t needed to go to the vet, I wouldn’t have driven by this vacant place and noticed what the low winter sunlight did to the dusty windows. And I wouldn’t have gone back a few days later to see what else was there.
It was a good find, and you’ll see more of this place. But for today, check out the way the peeling letters (that used to say “Sexton Automotive”) cast a shadow on that far wall.

PS: Balboa is fine. She just needed shots. The vet called her a “big girl” which is a LOT nicer than saying she’s fat, right?
Trapezoid sky
Probably anyone who has heard of San Antonio has heard about the Riverwalk; originally designed as a flood control system for the San Antonio River where it goes through downtown, it has become a big tourist attraction, with plenty of bars and restaurants lining the banks.
Lately, the River Walk has been extended to the north; this part is called the Museum Reach and it has completely different character than what the Riverwalk is famous far. It’s quieter, and there aren’t as many bars and restaurants. At the far end of the Museum Reach, is the redeveloping Pearl Brewery.
You can see this building from the Museum Reach; I believe it is still a part of the Pearl Brewery operations.
Also, if you want to walk toward downtown from the Museum Reach and start to get a little thirsty, look for the stairs up to the street at Lexington Avenue. Then when you’re at street level, head over to the bar at the Havana Hotel. It’s a fine place to have a beverage, or several, before you continue onward.

PS – The Havana Hotel is a great place to spend the night. It’s part of a group of hotels run by Liz Lambert, whose design sensibilities and touch of whimsy make for very interesting lodging.

Just a touch of red
This is as Christmas-y as we get here at One Day | One Image: a little bit of red in an otherwise black and white scene. I’m pretty sentimental, as you can tell.

The remains of the gin
This abandoned cotton gin is right in the middle of town, just a few blocks from the county courthouse. It’s sort of fantastic looking, now, to people like me.
But, I feel bad for anyone who lived nearby – and there are houses just across the street – when it was operational. Cotton ginning’s a dirty business; at the height of the season, everything around is covered with so many fluffs of cotton that it looks like snow. It might sound sort of pretty, but it’s not. And it’s hard to breathe, too.
