TPS 26: The International Competition

Six. In a row. That’s how many juried photography shows I didn’t get accepted to. That’s six emails that I didn’t read past the depressing combination of “thank you for your interest” and “however.”
Today, I got one of the other kinds of emails, the ones I read all the way to the end! My photo “Some Illumination” was accepted into the Texas Photographic Society’s International Competition; Alison Nordstrӧm was the juror. The show will be at the J. Wayne Stark Galleries at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, from May 18 through July 16; the show will have subsequent stops at teh Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas, and the Options Gallery at Odessa College, in Odessa, Texas. Art in a desolate location
This used to be part of a little complex on the edge of the town where I work; there was a cotton gin, the gin office, and this building. The gin stopped ginning. The office turned into a place called Larry’s BBQ, which had live music at lunch every day and where if you ordered anything other than a burger, you’d’ve made a big mistake. Then a chain BBQ place came to town and Larry’s closed up. After a few years, someone driving a bulldozer pushed Larry’s place into a pile, and someone else with a front-end loader loaded Larry’s into a container and hauled it (him?) away. Last year, someone else (I guess) spent a very long time taking the cotton gin down, probably to salvage the metal building components.
And, so, all that’s left is this little building, with a mural. (Which sounds fancier than calling it graffiti, but I’m in a generous mood, so what the hell.)

Some illumination
I found this in a building that was under renovation. I have a hard time thinking the renovation could have improved on these colors and that light. (But don’t tell the architect, who is also my Patient Spouse.)

Scene matched my mood
It was one of those gray and sad days where nothing feels quite right. Even the off-kilter light standard matched the way I was feeling.
