Horse Reflection
Back in 2016, I took a photography class that I didn’t like. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration at all to say that I hated it, to the extent that I was ready to come home two days in. But I stuck it out, partly because I’m cheap and didn’t want to lose the money I’d already paid and mostly because the Patient Spouse talked me down off that particular cliff.
One day during that class, we went to an out-of-the-way inn to photograph models. And not just models, but nude models. It was about a million kinds of weird, on top of already hating the class. But the place we went was nice, a quiet and green oasis in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I’d always wanted to go back, and over this past Labor Day weekend, I made it back there.
It was just as quiet and green as I remembered. And this time, everyone was clothed.
And this is the scene I saw every morning.

I’m so glad you found something from that class you were able to go back to!

The inn – Rancho Nambe – is a very relaxing spot for a weekend. Or a whole week, as far as that goes.

I think you would have shot this class or no class .

Yes, probably!

I like the way the reflection is brighter than the horse itself. I vacillate on whether that is natural or not but it really doesn’t matter as it is an enjoyable picture and possibly worth living through an awful class.
I probably would have wandered off that day of nude shooting. It never has had appeal to me despite guys typically liking nudes. Two photographers I have always looked to are Minor White and Edward Weston who shot a lot of them but those are not among my favorites of their work. I think I would be uncomfortable as you were.
I’ve had a few one on ones with accomplished photographers but never a class. It’s taken a while but I think I’ve overcome that lack of instruction…finally. I’d say you have also. 🙂

Shooting nudes raised a lot of questions, primarily “What do I focus on?” The course instructors paired up the students for the shoot and my partner was just as inexperienced as me – we eventually just started telling the models we didn’t know what we were doing (like they DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW that), and asked them to suggest poses or whatever. I hated it.
Our instructor was sort of pervy about it, which made it even worse.
Thanks for saying I’ve overcome my lack of instruction – it’s been a battle!
