Founders and the flag

This place was another stop on the Nostalgia Tour 2019, and was in fact the reason we were even in this part of South Texas. This restaurant has been around since the 1940s, selling local seafood and other specialties. My first visit here was in the late 1970s (it’s where my mother-in-law told me I was eating shrimp the “wrong way”*). Anyway, everything was pretty much how I remembered it. I don’t specifically remember the flag in the restroom hallway, but it seemed like it’s probably been there all along.

I ate some shrimp, and no one even cared if I did it the right way or not.

*Full disclosure: eating shrimp incorrectly was not the only thing she pointed out to me. It was, eventually, quite a lengthy list that included – but was certainly not limited to – laundry detergent, family planning, child rearing, and making coffee.

  1. What exactly is the right (or wrong) way to eat shrimp?

  2. I second that question. I assume it does not involve the use of a fork. Similar to pizza:

  3. I confess to now wondering what way is the right way to eat shrimp??

  4. I don’t know the proper way to eat a shrimp, but I hold it between my thumb and first finger and squeeze as I pull with my teeth to get the entire critter to pop out of it’s tail.
I am sure all those “suggestions” were made out of love and caring. Mothers-in-law are great that way. (Full disclosure…my mother-in-law was a delightful loving woman and I never heard a critical word from her lips…my father-in-law, well that’s another story).

    • Well, I guess this redeems your pizza-related embarrassment, because this is exactly the method that my MIL recommends. (By “recommends” I actually mean “demands.”)

I will say that I learned a lot about how to NOT be a good MIL from mine, and my daughter-in-law is the happy recipient of my knowledge. At least, I am assuming that’s what she thinks…
