The hearthside chair

022214

The door was open. Literally, I mean. The heavy metal door was unlocked, so I pulled it open. Behind it, a screen door like the kind on a 1950s house. I pushed it open, using my elbow, and stepped inside. Not far, though, as the floor was covered with debris and I am not quite current on my tetanus shot.

But across the room, I saw this chair and heater, looking quite happy together.

Night light

You may recall that I sort of like shooting in Santa Rosa. For someone like me, who looks for beauty in decay, it is a very beautiful location.

This grand old building is now abandoned by everything except pigeons. And possibly rodents. (That reminds me – I once heard someone say that pigeons were just rats with wings.)

But anyway. It’s lovely by day – here’s a shot of the same building by my pal Donna Catterick. And at night, it’s even better. If you ask me. Which I realize you did not.

In triplicate

Well, I suppose if one stairstep-plus-an-arch facade is good, then three of them must be even better. Right?

If you keep on going past these triplets, and turn left at the end of the street, you’ll be on highway 207. Keep going long enough and you’ll end up in Silverton, Texas. Which should not be confused with Silverton, Colorado. Or Silverton, Oregon. Just to clarify.

The desolation of the genre

020314

I never saw this place before it was ruins, so I don’t know what it used to be.  Maybe a small motel? A roadhouse? A private residence?

Whatever it was, it’s got a lot of company.  Just a little ways down the road is this abandoned motel , and back in the other direction is what’s left of the Hi-Way Cafe.

Roadside businesses seem to have fallen on hard times.

Satellite

013014

I spend around an hour and half every day in my car, driving back and forth to work. I listen to the radio* all the time. I have a lot of random lyrics stuck in my head.

Sometimes those lyrics pop up when I am not expecting them. Like when I saw this house and its four satellite dishes, and there was Dave Matthews in my head, singing:

Satellite dish in my yard
Tell me more, tell me more
Who’s the king of your Satellite Castle?

If you want this song in YOUR head (and who wouldn’t want that, really?), here’s a handy link.

*This is neither here nor there (probably), but I listen to satellite radio.
