Melted Ice

The thing out here is that failures are apparent nearly forever. Just before this trip, I was in Louisiana, where think layers of vegetation will cover things up practically overnight, so that abandoned places just look like all the other green stuff.

The desert wants to always remind us who’s in charge. And it’s not us.

Joubert

It was very nice of the roof to fall apart the way it did, so that a bit of additional light fell onto Mr. Joubert’s name.

Laz + Buddie

I am pretty sure you’ve been wondering how a town got a name like “Lazbuddie” – turns out that two fellows Luther “Laz” Green and his business partner Buddie Sherley started a store there in 1924. And naturally, the place became Lazbuddie. (Because Buddielaz sounds silly.)

This is the very location of their store. It used to be the post office, and for a while the only telephone in the community was there.

There are fewer than 200 people in Lazbuddie these days and they’ve all got their own phones. I assume.

Joists

A detail of the joists and wall of the old fire station in Springlake.  And what’s left of the shingles.

Tornado – 1 long

The interior of what used to be the fire station. I am extremely fond of the reminder, painted on the wall, of what siren to blow if there’s a tornado coming. I guess it times of immediate danger, it might be hard to remember one long…
