REPENT

Well, no visit to the area can be complete without a stop at Salvation Mountain, a visionary environment in the desert. The mountain itself is “made of adobe bricks, discarded tires and windows, automobile parts and thousands of gallons of paint” and is covered with paintings and symbols and Christian saying and Bible verses. On the grounds, there are several vehicles with similar decorations.

dune-edge

As the day’s light crept across the sand, the patterns grew deeper before fading in the full light of morning. The ruffled edge of the dune held for seconds then was gone, never to reappear in the same place or form again.

under her careful gaze

I did sort of feel like someone was watching me prowl around the beach, and then I figured out why it felt that way…

bird/flight

I never like to get up before dawn to get out and make photos. But when I do, I am always happy to have made the effort. There’s some kind of a lesson there, probably.

Anyway, on a trip to the Salton Sea with Keith Skelton and California Photography Workshops, we were at a viewing platform at the Sonny Bono National Wildlife Refuge to photograph the birds taking first flight. See what I mean? Totally worth setting the alarm for 4:45 a.m.

A real Chamber of Commerce scene

I don’t know… I *guess* a tomato festival has potential? This particular site, though, seems decidedly non-festival-like…
