I thought the weird thing about this scene was the way the grave marker was covered up. But what was even weirder is that the cover was made to fit the stone – a bespoke shroud, if you will.
Even bespoke shrouds need to be tied down around here – our spring winds can be fierce.

The thing about wandering around without an agenda or plan or anywhere else to be is that sometimes tiny gems will reveal themselves to you, like this tidy and unnamed private cemetery several miles off the main highway.

Hooper
The helmet caught my eye – and it would have caught yours, too, I think – as it’s not a typical thing to spot in a cemetery.
Much sadness: Nathan Hooper was 27 years old when he died and had only been married about a year and a half; his safety helmet seems ironic.

An overly optimistic estimate
In 2000, the town of Clairemont had a population of around 15 people, which was a sharp decline from its boom days of over 200 people. From the looks of the cemetery, the town’s founders anticipated that a LOT of people were going to die there…
