The other cross

Sun + shadows + pipe + downspout = one more cross at this ancient church.

Angels are the first to go

My patient spouse, who grew up in Nebraska and is much more familiar with snow than I am, is the one who recognized the remains of someone’s snow angel in front of this church.

Ladder

For reasons that I do not know, there was a ladder on this snowy roof. The snow was starting to melt, and sheets of it were sliding off the metal roofs of buildings all over town.

And another storm was on the way.

Mud + Straw

This is one of the oldest churches in northern New Mexico; the marker in front says it was founded in 1751 and that the building was built over a sixteen year period, beginning in 1760. The adobe walls are remudded periodically, and some of them are (again, according to the sign) as much as six feet thick.

The low wall around the churchyard is also adobe, a mixture of mud and straw. When you see it up close, it is sort of amazing that the church has lasted as long as it has.

Only by candlelight

The church doors were locked.

But that didn’t stop me from peeking inside a dusty window on the side of the building, where I saw this small chapel that seems to be lit only by those candles in the cross-shaped candelabra.
