Hard Times

051716

I think we can all think of an Internet-based reason why a roadside adult video store may have fallen on hard times.

This place is on my regular route to work and over the past few weeks I’ve been watching the sign’s decline. The panel that says “video” is barely hanging on, the whole thing rotates around when the wind’s just right, and one of these days (tomorrow, maybe) the whole thing will fall apart.

Drama at the end of the day

Sometimes springs days end like this – with the storm (and rain) headed away from us, like this one was. But even when we know no rain’s coming to us, the drama of the clouds as they build and billow and reform is worth watching.

The Aftermath

One down, one to go.

This is not an uncommon sight around here, where the uncertainties of farming, the need of fewer people to work the same crops, the (periodic) rise of the oil and gas industries, the increasing population of elderly people, and other factors mean that walking away and letting nature take its course is a common decision.

For what it’s worth, I saw a bedpan, a hymnbook, and a straw hat in the rubble.

Augers

You see it too, right? The curves and the way the light dances from them?

Dead end, probably

If you’re like me, you’re probably wishing that those smokestacks lined up exactly over ALL of the trash dumpsters, instead of just two of them…

None of the streets here go anywhere in particular – the one between the building and dumpsters ends at some railroad tracks a block away, and the other one abuts a freeway. But that’s OK – development (or developers) hasn’t located this part of town…
