to be attached to holiness

And so, after a brief stop at an unadorned Methodist church, I resumed my painted-church tour.

The next one I found was in High Hill, where I found this little altar around the corner from the main entrance, tucked in beside a crooked column. There was a barricade around the altar, so I wasn’t able to examine the things that had been left there. (There were also some other people in the church which sort of…hindered my exploration. If you know what I mean.)

These breathing shadows

This image brought to mind the same song I referenced yesterday, Celestial Horses by Bruce Cockburn (of course!). The specific lines this calls up are:

You can feel us gathering at the door

“but the Light comes pounding through”

I think this is my favorite photo I made inside the church – I’m always a fan of stained glass and how it manipulates the light passing through it.

And you know how sometimes things I see remind me of (usually random) song lyrics? This time it was the line “and the Light comes bounding through” from Bruce Cockburn’s song “Celestial Horses.” Give it a listen. If you want.

It was indeed celestial

The painted ceiling in this church was lovely beyond words.

Rhythm

I expect you were starting to think I was never going to get around to showing you what the inside of one of the famous painted churches looks like…

It is a lovely space, calm and quiet, and encouraging of reflection.
