Repaired (for now)

032214

This grave marker doesn’t have any names or dates on it. It’s small, only about a foot high. Unlike markers in fancier cemeteries, it’s made from concrete. Time has been hard on it, and now there’s a crack that runs from the base nearly all the way to the arms. A loop of wire, twisted a few times, does what it can to hold the little monument together. For now, anyway.

Through that glass, brightly

If you manage to find Puerto de Luna, keep going until you cross the Pecos River, then take the first turn to the right. After a bit, you’ll see a tiny church on the right side of the road. The sign over the door says Santa Inez.

It was closed up the day we were there.

But I shot this through one of the windows, looking straight across the tiny sanctuary and out the other side.

Cross/fence

I met up with my blogging friend from Always Backroads, and we found this a nice little cemetery in Puerto de Luna, New Mexico.

One of the graves had an iron fence around it, and it was topped with this arrangement of crosses. You can tell that someone still looks after the fence and repairs it when warranted. Not all the graves there were that lucky.

UPDATE:
My friend Ehpem wondered what this looked like in color. And since we here at One Day | One Image strive to keep our reader(s) happy, here it is, as requested. Opinions? Comments? Any further requests?

My dilemma

100113-a

100113-b

Usually, I don’t even think about it – I just know that whatever I am posting is going to be in black and white. Every now and then, though, a photo will demand to be in color, so that’s the way I post it.

This one, though, has been difficult to reason with. It wants it both ways, and honestly, I see its point.  The color one is nice, with the lavender and cream and green and blue.  But the other one’s got texture everywhere.  I can’t decide.

Opinions/comments/votes are welcome.

It used to be something else

I was drawn to this cross from the instant I stepped into El Calvario cemetery: it stood higher than everything but the few trees.

Later, I noticed that the wood had been used before. The wood in the crosspiece is a length of treated lumber, like you’d use for a deck or something that was going to be in contact with the ground; that’s why it has all those little horizontal lines. And the upright was something else, too – see how the parts on either side of the crosspiece are smooth compared to the lower section that’s had something nailed onto it.

A lot of mysteries, here.
