I drove through El Paso once long ago, and my mood sank.

My co-workers took me to lunch at a little neighborhood place and our (non-freeway) route there gave me a different appreciation for the city. But if you’re not used to that desert environment and lack of any discernible vegetation, I can see how the whole place looks pretty bleak.
