Hotel Scene: floodlights and rain

My side of the hotel faced the turnpike, which could account for those extremely bright floodlights, lighting the way for weary, moth-like travelers. On my last morning in Oklahoma, heavy rain on the windows diffused the light…but not very much.

PS: Today would have been my dad’s 98th birthday. He and my mom lived in Stroud, Oklahoma, where this photo was taken, for a short while in the mid-1950s. I almost never plan out my photos to be posted on any particular day, so it was a just a coincidence that this one landed on his birthday. (I think that sometimes the Photography Gods are doing some behind-the-scenes work.)

Panhandle Arrow

The beginning of the photographic journey that I mentioned yesterday started with a drive along many miles of unpaved roads in the very western edge of the Texas panhandle. I’d never been this way before and it was a stunningly beautiful drive. Right here, where I found this incredible arrow, the elevation was over 4,200 feet and autumn had already arrived; the air was cool and fresh and summer’s heat seemed almost like it had never happened.

This is a road I’d like to drive on many more times.

Storm Damage

I recently completed a journey across Oklahoma, as part of a not-yet-revealed photography project. The first night I was in the state was a night of many bad storms. Some of them were uncomfortably close to where I was.

A few days later, my work on the project completed, I headed for home. Along the way, I passed through a swath of damage from the earlier storms, including this piece of sheet metal that was wrapped around a fencepost.

chair + corrugations

One thing you may know about me: I will often stop to photograph corrugated metal siding.

And other thing you may also know: I will often stop to photograph feral chairs.

Both at once is a guaranteed photo.

the morning after

I don’t know why, but I could just tell the empty Sunday morning restaurant had been full of happy diners the night before.
