in a dusty climate

I am sure my late mother-in-law thought I was a terrible housekeeper*. But I am also sure she didn’t understand living in a dusty climate and the way the damn dust just filters in and lands on everything, despite your best efforts.

*Naturally, the blame (or whatever) fell on me. Not on my husband. That was How Things Were. Additional examples can be provided upon request.

the damp crept in

I mean, the damp didn’t so much creep in as it just let itself fall right in through the holes in the roof and the broken windows. It just sounds fancier to say it crept in….

there used to be a grocery store

Of course the grocery store has closed. That’s, sadly, a common thing in these rural towns out here.

They’re replaced by nothing or by convenience stores or by dollar stores, none of which completely fill the gap, but all of which contribute to the rise of food deserts.

carts

From the looks of things, the Abell-Prewitt Implement Company has gone out of business, leaving behind an array of merchandise. And two very dusty shopping carts.

I don’t know where residents of Ralls currently go to obtain their implements…

Also: what are residents of Ralls called? Ralls-ites? Rallsians? Rallers?

birds, fleeing

My aimless approach to the shed full o’ junk scared up a flock of sparrows (?), but it didn’t scare them much: they flew about three joists down and settled in like nothing ever happened.
