the frontier

I can’t imagine a world where there’s not a Frontier Restaurant in Albuquerque; it’s been right there on the corner of Central Avenue and Cornell Avenue since I can remember*. It’s good. It’s cheap. It’s open long hours. And (as you can see here) they bus the tables for you.

*Never you mind how long that is.

Back in the day when I lived in Albuquerque, this was a fancy office building. The subsequent decades have not been especially kind to the building and I would no longer consider it “fancy” by any known metric.

Conduit

A mural, a photograph, a pendant light, and a conduit. None of these things have anything in particular to do with each other, but together they make a relatively pleasant little scene.

The neon maiden

What my well-traveled friend failed to tell me about The Range Café was that their logo was not going to be what I expected. I thought – and you did, too, I’ll bet – that “range” referred to the open range, to ranching, to cattle country, or whatever.

So it was a little bit of a giggle when I realized the the “range” was an old-timey kitchen range.

This vintage neon maiden – who is quite bendy – was a bit of a giggle as well.

It was all about those lights

You’ve probably got that friend who always knows the best places to eat. And if you’re lucky that friend travels around and also knows the best places to eat in other places, too. My friend Andy is that guy, and when I was planning a trip to Albuquerque a while back he advised – or actually, strongly encouraged – me to visit the Range Café in Albuquerque.

The Range has several locations, and I can’t speak for all of them, but this one had a great mid-Century vibe going, as you can tell from these light fixtures. And also, some tasty food.
