palatino

Nights in Cuba were a little disconcerting. The blackouts could (and did) happen all over the place, for random amounts of time. And then there’d be the one place (like you can see here) that was literally the only bright spot on the entire block. It’s just the way of things.

to be Cuban

Among many other things, being Cuban means to be prepared to wait in line. We often saw lines like this, and never quite knew what the people were standing in line for. At one line, one of our guides reported that the people were waiting for chicken, but that wasn’t even helpful. Did he mean live chickens? Or whole chickens? Or leftover chicken from a restaurant? Or was it a mis-translation?

(That’s just one of the things I encountered in Cuba that I don’t really understand.)

the pensive man

You may remember an earlier photograph of a street-side mechanic? This is the man whose hands you saw in that other image. In case you wondered.

We were in his vicinity for several hours and that motorcycle never seemed to become operational while we were there; his face tells the same story.

communication

If you were wondering if there was a place where cell-phone usage overlaps with pay-phone utilization, I may have found it.

motorbikes, el prado

Our intrepid leader spent a long time showing us how to make these kinds of shots. My success rate was…well, right at 0% (and I am rounding up). But this one is passable. Maybe.
