claws

This was in the old part of the graveyard, the part my friend Kim called “Creepytown.” I was glad we were there in the autumn: a summer view from this spot would be very different and less creepy. And way less of something I’d want to photograph.

88 years

Some very cold flowers on the grave of someone who lived for 88 years. (Just a few minutes before this, there’d be rain and sleet-that-was-nearly-hail.)

daisies, pushed up

One thing I’ve learned as a photographer is that no matter how alluring the Thing In Front Of Me is to photograph, it’s real important to turn around and see what else is there. In this case, while the Castle Stalker was indeed lovely in the dying light, how about the flowers and that wood-shingled shed that were right there? They’re nice, too.

plants/coffee

The very first thing we did when we got to Edinburgh was to drop our bags at the hotel. The second thing we did was to seek out some coffee, which we found at this lovely shop that sells plants and coffee. It was a tiny place made even cozier by the condensation on the insides of the windows and the drizzle outside.

And later that day, after I’d had coffee and a brief exploration of our temporary new neighborhood, someone did me the kind favor of walking by with a purple umbrella.
