Who am I to doubt these mysteries?

It’s been a while since I’ve posted song lyrics that (in my mind) relate to the day’s image. This photo made me think of the song “Guadalupe” with the fantastic line “Who am I to doubt these mysteries?” and here are two versions of it. This one is by Tom Russell, and this one is by Gretchen Peters, with Tom Russell. (If you like the way Tom and Gretchen sound together, you should look for their album One to the Heart One to the Head.)

I found these well-used candles in the church in Terlingua, Texas’s most famous ghost town.

Museum in progress

I first visited this little ghost-town museum in November 2017; I don’t think one thing had changed between then and my return visit a year later. Evidently ghosts are pretty slow at building finish-out.

Seems to be going on forever

I didn’t stay here long – that haze in the background is a dust storm that was approaching quickly.

All of this seems like it’s forever – the crossroads, the deserted buildings, the spring dust.

April 1

I was in Clairmont, taking pictures, when an old man pulled away from the four-maibox post by the highway and stopped to ask me a question.

He said: You gonna put my town on the map?

I said: That depends. Do you want me to?

He said: Yes, ma’am, I do.

I said: I will do what I can.

So, here it is, the main sight in Clairmont, the 1895 jail.

From the late 1890s until 1954, Clairmont was the county seat of Kent County. Since 1954, though, it looks as though things have dropped off quite a bit. I don’t hold out much hope that this blog entry is going to put the old man’s town on the map, but I promised him I’d try.
