birthday girl

I was surely an unfortunate-looking kid, with those teeth coming in all over the place and my cat-eye glasses and sort of everything else. I looked nearly as unfortunate as that birthday cake.

My grandparents weren’t close (physically or emotionally) and decorating this birthday cake with my grandmother is practically the only memory I have of doing anything with her. That’s really sad and weird, but it’s just the way things landed.

And speaking of landing, check out the way that nasty ashtray landed itself right in the middle of the table, right there by my sister’s milk.

my first street photography

I was recently reminded (when I was looking a box of random stuff) that my street-photography efforts started much earlier than what I remembered. If you’d asked me prior to this discovery, I would have said 2022 or so marked the beginning.

But here’s proof that I actually did a bit of street photography in the summer of 1967, while on a family trip to Mexico.

Also, check out the guitars for sale in the background…

italian fashion is for real

In case you were wondering, there IS something eye-catching and a little bit exciting in Italian fashion. It is beautiful and it looks effortless (but I bet it’s not!). And somehow, even though we were melting in the heat, the fashionably-dressed Sicilians always looked fresh and comfortable. (Except maybe the ones wearing those very tall shoes…)

holds the treasure you seek

I can’t remember how I found this grotto, but that doesn’t really matter too much: the point is that I did find it.

jesus and roses

The thing about traveling in a group of photographers is that sometimes they get clumped up because everyone needs (Needs, I say!) that shot from that angle in that light of that Duomo. Or whatever. It can (and did) get frustrating. But if I hadn’t been all pissy way back there at the back of the clump, I probably wouldn’t have noticed the shrine in the wall. And I still got the obligatory shot of the Duomo.
