Behind the stairs

One of my local informants strayed from ghost stories for a few minutes to tell me about the time her brothers left their little sister stranded at the top of these fire stairs. They sound like nice boys, don’t they?

Reports are the boiler room is haunted

I promised I wouldn’t use their names, but a couple of people who grew up here in Bledsoe told me the local consensus is that the boiler room at this abandoned school is haunted. And so is the school itself, apparently. And the very street in front of the school.

This friendly and informative pair wandered over from across the street to find out what I was doing. They were happy to tell me lots of stories about growing up in this town, and all the ghosts, and so forth. Both of them live in the next county, in a larger town, and spend their weekends here in Bledsoe. “I love being in the country,” one of them said.

Mailbox

I am almost positive that this is not a U.S. Postal Service-approved mailbox. And I am even more certain that it doesn’t matter.

Half Dead

Most days I take the back way to work, which means about a 20-mile drive on a two-lane farm road. I look at this tree every day, and have been a little sad this summer to see that most of the tree’s branches are dead.

The other morning, I pulled the car out of the garage, noticed interesting clouds in the west (the way I’d shortly be heading), and went back inside for the camera. And this is what I saw when I got to the tree.

Food Prep Line

A food prep line, a tangle of cables, and a soda machine: the empty restaurant.
