Ghost Slide

The difference between this abandoned school and all the other ones I’ve shot is that the Patient Spouse attended two years of elementary school here, which made the desolation a little more depressing.

But those two slides, barely holding their own against the onslaughts of time and weeds, turn a sad place into a creepy one…

Last winter’s hat

If you go to Maywood, Nebraska, and look through the door of the community hall, you can see a chair, a baseball uniform, a display case full of trophies, a basketball court. And you’ll also see last winter’s hat, hanging upside down and waiting for cold weather to return.

Salt is very popular

Evidently, salt is a very popular item in this part of Nebraska – it accounts for 25% of the words in the signs on this market.

On the other hand, maybe the proprietors over-estimated the need for salt: the place is out of business…

The Corral

I guess there aren’t that many places across the country where the term “cart corral” makes sense. I would have anticipated that the middle of Nebraska would have been one of those places, but this one was left in a surplus yard. And there weren’t any carts around.

Formidable Door Stop

I guess those excellent wooden doors weren’t staying shut, so the spool was put into service as a door stop; those Nebraskans are resourceful like that.
