the way is clear

I was a weird, anxious little kid. Almost everything gave me reasons to worry.

For example, Young Me would have been terrified of these cliff-side signs; I figured our station wagon and our entire family would probably somehow not make the curve and would wind up in a busted-up heap way down below.

Now, all these decades later, I was so brave and stood right there and made a few photos. And then, I got in my car and continued the drive up the mountain without the tiniest bit of anxiety.

yellow fish

Usually Santa Rosa is a drive through place, on my way elsewhere. Rarely, I’ll stop for the night, like I did last month.

And because it was a beautiful evening, with a hint of cool in the air, I spent a long time outside making photos of things like a concrete pier at the local town lake. Those yellow fish sort of drew me in to the scene…

well.

Well.

This is the only place I’ve seen a community well building. I mean it’s the only place I’ve seen one that SAYS so.

(Villanueva is not really on the way to anywhere, if you’re normal and take regular routes. It was a nice surprise – it felt like we’d found ourselves in another time and place. But it was a place where there were wells.)

what was, what is, and what shall be

I like the three generations of this particular flower – known in some parts of the country as jimson weed –  and that’s why I took the photo.

And because (in spite of the way it often looks) I did some research for this post and found out more. This plant’s got a lot of interesting attributes:

  1. It’s poisonous
  2. It is an aggressive, invasive weed in many parts of the world
  3. It’s been used as an hallucinogen
  4. And it can be used to create intense, sacred, or occult visions

And if THAT’S not enough, my pal Wikipedia says “it is unlikely ever to become a major drug of abuse owing to effects upon both mind and body frequently perceived as being highly unpleasant, giving rise to a state of profound and long-lasting disorientation or delirium with a potentially fatal outcome.”

So, anyway, I guess I’ll stick to just taking photos.

water/color

Movement on the top of the water kept this shot of the rock steps nicely abstract. That wasn’t necessarily the effect I was going for, but it was the one I got.

I don’t hate it.
