italian fashion is for real

In case you were wondering, there IS something eye-catching and a little bit exciting in Italian fashion. It is beautiful and it looks effortless (but I bet it’s not!). And somehow, even though we were melting in the heat, the fashionably-dressed Sicilians always looked fresh and comfortable. (Except maybe the ones wearing those very tall shoes…)

holds the treasure you seek

I can’t remember how I found this grotto, but that doesn’t really matter too much: the point is that I did find it.

The thing about traveling in a group of photographers is that sometimes they get clumped up because everyone needs (Needs, I say!) that shot from that angle in that light of that Duomo. Or whatever. It can (and did) get frustrating. But if I hadn’t been all pissy way back there at the back of the clump, I probably wouldn’t have noticed the shrine in the wall. And I still got the obligatory shot of the Duomo.

cathedral boys, playing with confetti

The church in Ragusa Ibla – the Duomo di San Giorgio – is stunning. Look it up; you’ll see what I mean. It’s on a lot of Sicilian tourism brochures.

In a stunning departure from what my previous photographic self would have done, instead of making a bunch of photos of the building, I spent my time watching these two kids playing in drifts of left-over confetti on the church steps. And photographing them, hoping to catch just the right moment with them and their game.

And, also, how about that one kid’s fedora?
