Dowels

My reader(s) who were around in 2013 may recall my earlier photograph from the church in the Terlingua ghost town. That image was one of the first ones I made where I thought maybe this photography gig might work out.

I hadn’t been back to the site since then and was eager to photograph the church again. Once inside, I decided nothing I could shoot of the whole space would be better than what I had already done, so I turned my eyes and my camera to the smaller things.

Vegetation and the Mountain

The scratchy desert plants reach toward the sky, while the springtime sun warms them and the photographer.

Mom

When I was six years old, my family went on our first-ever camping trip; the Davis Mountains were our destination. Something happened on that trip, I guess, because even now, decades later*, I feel good when I am out in this part of the state. The air is nice, and so is the scenery. The days are beautiful and the nights are even better.

But as good as it feels to me, there is a family somewhere whose mom died along the road. They built her a marker, with “MOM” inside a heart on the cross.

Swim Wear

Way out there in far west Texas, in the middle of the desert, a sign advertising tube rentals and swim wear does seem a little bit out of place. But only until you notice that just across the road is a beautiful spring-fed desert oasis. Then things start to make a little bit more sense.

The Graceful Proportions

I am not sure what purpose this building used to have, but it was lovely to look at – nice proportions, plenty of natural light (especially since there plenty of broken windows to let in even more light), some graffiti to read.
