family portrait
My fantastic traveling companion and I went on a bit of an accidental hike – it started out sort of as a “where does this path go?” situation and ended up with our walking across a bog or two and then along a small river. The normal people who were out that day took the normal trail, which is OK if that’s the sort of thing you’re into.
Anyway, over there on the normal-people trail, I spotted this happy family trying to get the baby to look at the camera.

Evidently that bird had had enough posing for me while it was atop the cross.
So it flew away.
But I still got a photo because who really needs to do stuff like compose and wait and contemplate and focus and contemplate a little more and then wait a while longer when you can just go on muscle memory and a fast shutter-finger?

You may recall that for a really long time, I shot only in black and white. That was my thing. There was (from what I could tell) no reason to even think about doing anything else.
But this right here? With all the color?
Maybe I’m changing my mind…

She was so nice about letting me take her photo the other day. It just shows what people* keep telling me: if you’re friendly and polite most of the time you’ll get a yes when you ask someone if you can take their photo.

*Don. It’s mostly Don Toothaker who tells me that. Over and over. And then, finally, it started to sink in.
