Formidable Door Stop

112316

I guess those excellent wooden doors weren’t staying shut, so the spool was put into service as a door stop; those Nebraskans are resourceful like that.

Sew What

Just about all that’s left here is the sewing machine. And the stain on the floor.

Like a cell block

This image right here: this is why I don’t delete my images after a quick look when I upload them after a shoot. Nope – I keep everything except the ones that are completely over- or under-exposed.* Because you just never know…

This one was a victim of sloppy shooting. It was crooked and it needed a lot of work to correct the perspective. I tried fixing it a couple of times, but it never worked. Then, the other day, I felt like giving it another try. Why now? I know more about Photoshop than when I’d worked on it before and thought it was worth a little bit more attention.

Still it took a couple of tries to get what you see here, with horizontals and verticals lined up the way I wanted. After that, getting the rough and dark cell-block look I was after was easy.

*And yes, that does require a LOT of storage space….

UPDATE:
Someone over on my One Day | One Image Facebook page asked what this shot looked like before I worked on it, so here you go:

The Way

110216

Maybe you remember that I took a photography class from Keith Carter back in the summer?

In class he said, “Don’t take pictures of churches.”

In class he said, “Don’t take pictures of cemeteries.”

In class he said, “There are no rules.”

Maybe what he meant to say is that he doesn’t take pictures of churches. Or cemeteries. And that each of us must seek our own way, and photograph accordingly.

A sense of abandonment

100116

I rented a (very) wide angle lens*, and spent a good part of the weekend putting it through its paces. Now, you already know how much I love shooting interiors of empty places, so you won’t be surprised that I really, really like shooting them with (very) wide angle lenses.

Anyway, I was pretty fond of the interior of this place; I like all the curves and how they’re offset by that one, stark shelving unit on one side and by the graphic border design on the other.

*18mm – so wide it almost could see around corners.
