when we thought the rain would stop
What we thought would be an enjoyable evening watching the Amarillo Sod Poodles* playing baseball didn’t really pan out all that well. There was a one-hour rain delay before the game even started and then, in a show of unfounded optimism, the crew pulled away the tarp and the game started. By the third inning we were as drenched as we wanted to be and left; the rain never let up and the game was called in the sixth inning.
But it was good while it lasted.

*Yes. That is the actual name. It’s a slang term for prairie dogs.
Aerosmith
When I’m out shooting, it’s often the only time I visit a particular location. That makes me think the place always looked the way it did prior to my photograph and would also continue to look that way forever. That makes me always a little surprised if I see it again and it’s different.
As it happened, five weeks after I made this image, I was back on the same street (at very nearly the same time of day). This time, most of the concert posters were gone from the window, there was a big motorcycle parked on the sidewalk, and the building was for lease. Maybe I’ll go back in five more weeks to see it again…

“Nearly” is long enough
Those too-short curtains reminded me of my high school days, standing on the beige ottoman in the den while my mother pinned the hems in my dresses. It was the 1970s, so of course she never pinned them short enough to suit me. But I was resourceful, and predictably devious, and would always offer to sew the hems. At that point, it was just a matter of moving the pins up a inch* before I started sewing.
