caldera

Did you think my account was hacked or something when you saw this color landscape photo?

To be honest I am sort of surprised by it as well, but it really is a photo that I made. On purpose.

half-way

About half way up the drive to Los Alamos there’s a scenic pullout, and “normal” travelers might pull over long enough to take some selfies and/or glance across the landscape before they get back in their cars and resume the trip.

Photographers (who are almost never in the “normal” camp) will pull over, turn off the car, get out cameras and lenses and tripods and ND filters, and spent a long-ass time making photos.

In case you were wondering why it takes photographers practically forever to get anywhere.

eventually it rained

It was monsoon season in northern New Mexico. Every morning started out with perfectly clear skies and by mid-afternoon clouds began to build up for the evening rainfall. After the rain, the air was clear and cool. It was delightful.

And photogenic.

sound of mull, morning

The morning that the rest of the group hiked to a lighthouse I decided to NOT hike to a lighthouse. Part of it was that I wasn’t keen on hiking on a bunch of black ice, but mostly I felt the call to get some photographs that weren’t going to be similar to what everyone else was going to get.

It sounds pretty anti-social when I write it down, but anyway, here’s the non-lighthouse view that I saw that day…

Quiraing and a rainbow

“This is the best view in Great Britain.” That’s what our Scottish guide told us about this place. And while I haven’t seen all the notable views, I tend to believe him…

It’s called the Quiraing, and it’s a geological formation on the very top of the Isle of Skye. Parts of it are still moving, and as a result, the road up requires frequent repairs.

There’s a lot of weather there. We had drizzle. We had rain. We had sleet. We had driving rain. And then we had sun…and a rainbow.
