similarities

I remember when I saw this a couple of years ago – I almost hyperventilated at the sight of two things that were so different, yet somehow almost the same.

I remember my traveling companions rolling their eyes at my breathless state.

I remember making the photo.

What I don’t remember is why I never got around to posting it until now…

trash/stairway

San Antonio’s famed Riverwalk is below street level, which adds some interest to walking around. If you get really lucky, you can see the street-level entrance to a bar or restaurant and at the same time spot the river-level back stairs where last night’s trash awaits collection.

In this case, I was looking at the back stairs to Dick’s Last Resort while standing next to the street-level doorway; a little bit later that same morning, when I was on the river, a man setting up tables for Dick’s L. R. called my attention to cat that was stalking a couple of ducks*. That was a nice bit of coincidental symmetry.

*The ducks escaped a feline-induced end when the cat ran away. In case you were worried.

alley, with bird

I will always look down an alley. And I will generally photograph it, especially if there happens to be a cooperative bird in the vicinity.

the shrine

How unfortunate that I was unaware of the existence of the Hispanic Elvis until after he’d passed away.

A very sweet article about him said, “Hispanic Elvis didn’t need a stage, all he needed was an open space, like the number 68 bus stop, to entertain and spread joy all across San Antonio.”

cleaning day

Remember two days ago ago when I mentioned how much I liked to watch sidewalks being hosed down?

I watched this guy for a long time – he not only hosed down the sidewalk but hit the bridge supports, too. The water was pumped out of the river and the runoff went straight back into it – in case you were wondering about that and also maybe if you were wondering if there’s a difference between “clean” and “wet.” But at any rate, here you go with a non-touristy view of the Riverwalk.
