the cathedral and the court (and a red car)
This was the view from our window in Edinburgh – it’s St. Giles’ Cathedral, the Scottish supreme court building, a statue*, some people, and a shiny red car.
When I made the photo, I thought it was about the stained glass windows in the cathedral, but now I’ve changed my mind and the red car seems a lot more important than it did initially. (To be honest: initially, I wished it wasn’t even there at all. But now I see that it pulls together all the other red parts of the image in a way I enjoy.)

*The statue is of a gentleman with the succinct name and title of Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch, 7th Duke of Queensberry, KG, PC, FRS, FRSE, styled Lord Eskdail between 1808 and 1812 and Earl of Dalkeith between 1812 and 1819.

The very first thing we did when we got to Edinburgh was to drop our bags at the hotel. The second thing we did was to seek out some coffee, which we found at this lovely shop that sells plants and coffee. It was a tiny place made even cozier by the condensation on the insides of the windows and the drizzle outside.
And later that day, after I’d had coffee and a brief exploration of our temporary new neighborhood, someone did me the kind favor of walking by with a purple umbrella.

Scottish mist blurs the night
I can see how living in a misty climate could get old. But since I don’t live in a misty place, it seemed enchanting and delightful. And – bonus! – it opened up the possibility of utilizing the reflective, wet pavement and doing some intentional camera movement images.

coffee girl
The first morning in Edinburgh was a treat, wandering around in the mist with my camera in hand, taking in sights of a place I’d never been.
And that’s how I happened to see this young woman at a coffee shop. (And how she happened to see me.)

In the background kids were playing in a bounce house. Or crying. Or pushing each other out of the way. Or sliding down all wonky.
