Dry ground, wood crosses

012613

Approximately a million miles from anywhere (my estimate) lies the Terlingua ghost town. It’s a relic of long-gone quicksilver mines. But it also has the Starlight Theater, hosts the Terlingua International Chili Championship, and was referenced in the title of Jerry Jeff Walker’s famous album ¡Viva Terlingua!, which was released in 1973.

That’s kind of a lot, for a ghost town.

It also has a cemetery, where most of the markers – the ones that are still legible, anyway – date back to the town’s mining days in the early part of the last century. Most of the graves have jars or bottles that hold candles; I had a sense that ghostly visitors come at night, moving from grave to grave, lighting candles as they go. I would like to see it on a starry night – maybe the ghosts will be there, too.

Note 1: See the people in the photo on the Starlight Theater link? I think almost the very same people were there the day I was….
Note 2: Seriously, 1973? How old am I that I actually bought a copy. When it came out. On vinyl. In 1973.

So, it IS a thing!

Remember the other day when I wondered if abandoned oil company shacks with boats parked next to them was a thing?

It appears that, yes, it is a thing: another sighting!

Where the wind gallops

091512

I am very pleased to announce that my solo exhibit Where the Wind Gallops: 24 Landscapes will open on March 21, 2013, at Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas.

The show will be in the Formby Room of the Southwest Collection. It will be up through May 14, 2013.

Should your travels bring you to Lubbock this spring, I’d be happy for you to stop by the Formby Room and check out the show.

And, just to prove that I do sometimes produce color images, here’s another one from the show:

Risk management

012413

I love the bottom three rungs of this ladder: they have a distinct “rustic” or “artisanal” feel to them, don’t you think?

But I am not a risk manager. Or a safety officer.

I am just alley-roaming photographer.

Pebble field

012313

It was a warm day, warmer than usual for January. And the wind wasn’t blowing, which is rare enough to warrant a mention. I wandered the streets (and alleys, which you probably already knew) of downtown.

This shot captures most of our skyline, as all three buildings (plus one steeple) rise above the field of pebbles left behind when a building was demolished to make way for – well, I guess for a field of pebbles.
