Grandness

If you’ve heard of Shiner, Texas, you’ve probably heard of it because of beer*.

But there’s also quite a dramatic church. As I made my photos, I could hear murmured conversation from…somewhere. Maybe it was the priest and a parishioner or two. Or maybe it was the brother saints for whom the church is named. Or maybe the priest and the brother saints were discussing things that needed discussing. I’ll never know.

*In college, Shiner was the cheapest beer available. Since then, it’s reinvented itself, which is great, so now there are better reasons than “it’s really cheap” to purchase it. However, I am not sure I can get on board with their current offering of Shiner S’more Chocolate and Marshmallow Ale

the light of the world

I first visited this place in May, and a return trip so soon seemed sort of redundant: I wasn’t sure there would be any new photographic opportunities. But still, we were in the area and it seemed silly to not stop.

This shot was – I thought – about the light on the wall between those two pews. And then, Photoshop helped me to see that it was really about the weird sunlight on the left side, radiating outward from the statue and crucifix. (This is the second blog appearance by the statue.)

Station

Those thick adobe walls are no match for the heat and humidity in South Texas, so sometimes that fan is called into service.

I am that person

I feel like you already know this, but I am indeed that person who takes a camera into the restroom. And this is why.

Some News

I am happy to report that this photo was just awarded third place at a photography show here in Lubbock. The show, High and Dry: a Photographic Exhibition of People and Places of the World’s Dry Lands, is sponsored by Office of International Affairs at Texas Tech University.

In a bit of an embarrassment-of-riches situation, I also had three other images juried into the show:

A couple of things:
1. Yes, that show does, in fact, have the longest title of any photo show ever.
2. Evidently September 1, 2019, was a good day for me to be out with my camera: two images made that day were accepted into the show.
3. I admit to having a bit of a photographic crush on the entire state of New Mexico.
3. Thanks to everyone who follows this blog! Your continued interest in my work keeps me out there making more and more images.
