X-ray vision

I first photographed this building back in 2013, and I posted shots of a very messy room and of an abandoned refrigerator. But I didn’t go inside.

Now, though, I’m bolder than I was five years ago, and on a return visit to Colorado City I just walked right on in. And found this treasure in a back room.

Ponytail

The wind, coming through the broken glass, had whipped the windowshades into a weird ponytail of desolation.

A great deal of confusion

Every time I drive from Lubbock to Austin, I go through the tiny town of Melvin, Texas. Almost the only thing there is an out-of-business store, and it’s been out of business since I can remember. And if you can believe it, with my love of out-of-business businesses, I’d never even stopped to look around.

But last month, I had the opportunity to rectify my error. It was worth the stop – this confusing situation right here, with reflective glass and boarded-up windows, made it worth the brief delay in getting home.

(The place is for sale if you’re interested.)

Midway (gone away), 2

This was a treat – I got to walk right in to the abandoned drive-in and make as many photos as I wanted.

Midway (gone away), 1

A foggy day, an abandoned drive-in theater: how could it get any better? Well, having a camera would make it better. How fortunate that I did have one on hand…
